Some others are often hidden from plain sight. Or, they have such long service intervals that owners can forget about them. That is until something goes wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these is the timing <a href=\"http:\/\/carlots.ng\/motoring\/when-were-car-seatbelts-invented\/\">belt<\/a>. And, oftentimes, when you go to replace it, it\u2019s recommended you replace the water pump, too. But why is that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-the-timing-belt-do\"><strong>What Does the Timing Belt Do?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/06\/14\/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-timing-belt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>Autoblog<\/em> explains<\/a>, the timing belt is a key component in keeping your car\u2019s engine running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the engine to make power, its pistons have to rotate, and the combustion chamber\u2019s valves open and close. The pistons are attached to a crankshaft, which sends power through the transmission and differential to the wheels. Meanwhile, the valves move thanks to a rotating camshaft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this operation requires precise timing. If the intake valve stays open too long, air will escape, and power drops. And if too much air escapes, the mini-explosion which creates the power won\u2019t happen. <a href=\"https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/heres-what-interference-engines-are-and-why-they-exist-1823935549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>Jalopnik<\/em> explains<\/a> if you have an interference-type engine. These engines have valves that open further into the combustion chamber for improved power and efficiency. But, if the piston and valves are out of sync, the piston could collide with the extended valve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, to keep the crankshaft and camshaft(s) synced, both are linked via the timing belt. Or, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamcocolorado.com\/signs-your-timing-belt-is-failing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>reported here<\/em><\/a>, depending on what kind of vehicle you have, a timing chain. The belt is quieter and doesn\u2019t have to be lubricated. But the chain is made of metal, which lasts longer. Regardless, at some point, due to stretching and wear, they\u2019ll have to be replaced. Typically, for a timing belt, that\u2019s after 60,000-100,000 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/08\/12\/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-serpentine-drive-belt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Autoblog <\/a>explains that the timing belt isn\u2019t the same as the serpentine (\u2018drive\u2019) belt. True, both are connected to the crankshaft. However, the former is located inside the engine, albeit by the outer wall. The latter is found externally and drives many of the car\u2019s accessories, like the alternator, power steering pump, and A\/C pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, the timing belt sometimes pulls double duty. Not only does it keep the crankshaft and camshaft(s) synced, but it sometimes also drives the water pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-you-replace-the-water-pump-and-timing-belt\"><strong>Why Should You Replace the Water Pump and Timing Belt?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Technically, replacing the water pump with the timing belt isn\u2019t strictly necessary. The water pump is still fine if your coolant isn\u2019t leaking and your engine isn\u2019t overheating. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carfax.com\/blog\/do-i-need-a-new-water-pump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><em>Carfax<\/em> explains<\/a> there are some reasons why replacing the water pump and timing belt together is a good idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The water pump\u2019s lifespan is typically 60,000-100,000 miles.
