Toyota is known for building reliable engines that can last for years and are designed to withstand daily driving. With proper care and maintenance, Toyota engines can last over 200,000 miles, depending on the model and type of vehicle.

You don’t become the world’s best-selling and most reliable brand without making great engines that perform consistently well. Over the years, Toyota has introduced resilient engines that have regularly given owners hundreds of thousands of miles of driving enjoyment.

CarBuzz singles out a few sturdy Toyota engines that have stood the test of time, including the 3.5-litre V6 2GR engine, which has driven many of the brand’s most popular models (Tacoma, Camry, Highlander and Avalon; Lexus ES, GS, IS and RX).

Nissan Engine

Engines by Nissan and Renault have done very well. The Japanese brand known for reliability has 19 Best Engines awards, ranked just behind Volkswagen. Ward’s awarded Nissan’s VQs heavily. As for the best Nissan car on Wards’ count, the Infiniti is the clear choice. It was chosen 10 times and has streaks of 2003-2008 and 2017-2019 with the Q60, Q50, and QX50. The Q50 and the Q60 are built on the VR30DDTT with the 3.0-liter V6. The Q50 adds a twin-turbo. Nissan’s Leaf won in 2011 with its 80 kW synchronous motor. A Nissan engine was chosen in 2022. It’s a 1.5-liter inline-3 with variable compression, engine code KR15DDT, featured in the Nissan Rogue.

Honda Engine

Honda is a recent winner with its 1.5-litre inline-4 in the Acura Integra in the 2022 awards circle. It is an L-series, L15A DOHC. In 2020 and 2019, the Honda Accord Hybrid was recognized for its 2.0-liter inline-4 LFA1 DOHC. Honda engines won twice in 2018 in the inline-4 Civic and the Clarity electric. The Honda Accord plug-in hybrid 2.0-litre K24W 120-KW showed up in 2017. Honda is a reliable brand, and it’s no surprise the Honda Accord has been recognized a full 10 times, the first showing in 2004.

Lexus Engine

According to J.D. Power’s 2023 Vehicle Dependability Study, Lexus topped the list of rankings and the RX model was named the most dependable vehicle on the market (tied with Toyota’s C-HR). For 2024, the luxury brand led its segment and the overall industry for the second year in a row.

Dependability has quickly become Lexus’ hallmark, which can’t be said about most other luxury brands on the market. Equipped with engines like the 1UR-FE, 2JZ and 2GR variants, Lexus (and some Toyota) models are some of the most reliable cars you can buy.
