When driving, I’m sure we all run into Nigerian police on the roads every day. Sometimes, on several occasions in a day. It is part of the Nigerian Police’s duty to carry out routine checks on the road. This also involves asking drivers for the necessary documents required to drive on the road in Nigeria. Not having these documents has consequences because it is not only illegal not to have them, but not having them could also subject you to harassment at the hands of corrupt law enforcement agents, who just want someone to prey on. To be free from harassment, it is important you have the necessary documents ready just in case you’re asked.

1. Driver’s License

This is unarguably the most important document you must have as a driver in Nigeria. It is non-negotiable. The driver’s license is one of the first documents required by the Nigerian police to show your eligibility to drive in Nigeria. Without it, you shouldn’t even enter the roads with a car. The driver’s license is definitely the most important document any driver must carry. It is official proof that the driver is legally permitted to drive a vehicle on Nigerian roads. 2. Certificate of Roadworthiness

A certificate of roadworthiness is an official document that shows that your vehicle is safe enough to be used on public roads. It is one of the essential documents required by the Nigerian police. Without this certificate, your vehicle would not be allowed on Nigerian roads because the certificate shows that your car is in good condition to be driven. This certificate is usually issued after a vehicle has passed the roadworthiness test that is conducted by the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO). The test checks the vehicle’s lights, brakes, tyres, and other important components that are needed for its operation.

3. Vehicle Registration Document

Your vehicle has to be registered with the appropriate state or federal authorities in Nigeria. The vehicle registration documents show that your vehicle has been registered. It is one of the most important documents that is required by the Nigerian police and must be presented upon request. The registration documents typically include details like the vehicle’s make, model, year of manufacture, and the name of the registered owner. You’ll receive a vehicle registration certificate after successful registration.

4. Proof of Ownership Document

The car is yours? How do you prove that? The proof of ownership document gives evidence that you are the legal owner of the vehicle. It is a document that is essential, and it’s required by Nigerian police. It is important as it shows that the person driving the car is either the owner of the car or is authorized to use the car. Without it, the car could be called stolen. This document is mostly important in situations where there is a dispute over the ownership of the vehicle. 5. Vehicle License/ Road Tax

The vehicle license is often referred to as a road tax. This document is one of the most important car documents that the Nigerian police would always request. It is required for all sorts of vehicles as long as they are operating on Nigerian roads. This license must be renewed annually and serves as proof that the vehicle owner has paid the necessary taxes to keep the vehicle on the road. 6. Vehicle Insurance Certificate

The insurance certificate proves that a vehicle has been insured against third-party damages. 7. Tint Permit Document (if applicable)

If you are someone who loves and wants a tinted window for a car, then you should get a tint permit. All cars in Nigeria with a tinted window are required to have a tint permit. This permit is issued by the Nigerian police, and it is a mandatory document for all cars with tinted windows. The absence of a tint permit when required can lead to a vehicle being impounded.

8. Hackney Permit (For Commercial Vehicles)

If you plan to use your vehicle for commercial use, one of the most important documents that would be required of you by the Nigerian police is your hackney permit. All commercial cars must have it. This permit authorizes the vehicle to be used for commercial purposes, such as transporting goods or passengers for a fee.
