The car every mechanic in Nigeria already knows how to fix

There is no learning curve with a Corolla, and that is the entire point. Every mechanic from Lagos to Maiduguri has worked on one, both original and quality-aftermarket parts are stocked in every spare-parts market in the country, and the 1.8 engine returns something in the region of 12-14km/l around town, closer to 17km/l on a clear expressway run -- numbers that hold up well against a household budget that has to survive fuel price swings.
The honest cost of that ubiquity is status: a Corolla reads as the default, sensible choice rather than a car anyone aspires to, and its long run as the go-to driving-school and ride-hailing car has not helped the image. Buyers who need a car and not a statement are the ones who end up happiest with it -- it is rarely anyone's dream car and almost never anyone's regret.
